You might be able to with a solid stain which is more like paint but still considered stain.
You could experiment by staining a cedar board the same color as your home .Then when it’s dry try the solid hide lighter color you’re thinking about.
My house is cedar siding as well. It is an “Irish Cream” color, and I have Hunter green shutters. Just tonight, I received a paint estimate from a reputable painter in town. I was mistaken that my home was “painted.” He corrected me, and I now know it is Sherwin Williams solid tinted stain called “Woodscapes”. He said after sanding areas etc, he would use a primer first called, “Woodscapes” as well. It is “self priming.”
