Can I install insulation board and vinyl siding over my current asphalt shingle siding? Will it cause problem?

Vinyl Siding over aspahlt shingles. Row home built in 1900. Siding needing to be replaced is in back. I do not want the hassle of pulling down, but will hammering in 1/2″ insulation board then vinyl siding be detremental?

sorry, you will have to remove the ashalt shingles. by the way the shingles proper name is insulbrick..

I have never done that. But it can be done. The shingles will act as a vapor barrier not allowing the moisture out or in and that could cause a problem but I dought it.

I believe Mr dj has the correct answer. If you start trying to nail through ashpalt shingling, you will break it all up. (and unless the new siding you’re wanting to install has a brick design, I don’t think it is call ‘insulbrick’. A vinyl siding can be bought that looks like just plain shiplap.)
