Surely they can order some from someone, the shakes have to be available to builders etc !!!

In part I agree with benedict, but I wouldn’t bother going back.

Certainly in the construction industry, local to you, there has to be companies that do siding, and even if they don’t have Cedar Shake, should be considerate enough to direct you, more directly in your search.

I use Lowes and HD every day of my life, but I find them to be mostly a convenience. If they didn’t exist I’d still make my business exist.

I live in MA, and home depot does carry them in 1/2 boxes.

You will need to locate a roofing supply yard. Make sure you know the thickness of the material you are replacing. If the material is smooth or sawn and less than a 1/2″ thick they may be cedar shingles. If it is rough and split they are cedar shakes. Mediums are typically 1/2″ or a little thicker at the butts, heavy’s are 3/4″ or thicker at the butts and then there are 1″ Plus or jumbos.

Look for mostly vertical grain to reduce curling. Don’t forget to use window wrap of 30# felt to weather proof around the windows prior to installing the wall treatment and trim.
