The best choice is a product by Sikkens, call Cetol Log & Siding. It is a two coat product and will give you and amazing finish. spar varnish would be a bad choice-it would peel over time. thompsons water seal is a JOKE. it will last 6 months, no more. more transparent, semi-transparent sealers will work as well, but they will not give you any shine/finish like the cetol L&S. It is an amazing product, and I highly recommend it. you can only find it at paint stores, NOT big boxes like lowes, depot, etc. It will cost about $70.00 per gallon, and like i said, you will need to do two coats. it should last 4-5 years, and then you would need to apply a maintinence coat.

I agree with using the sealers.
Or a stain/sealer.
Polyurethanes and varnishes tend to flake
if exposed to sun for long peroids.
Also a good spar is very expensive, and is
NOT low maintenance.

Cedar is a stand alone wood and does not need anything except an occasional cleaning! it may darken over the years but it will last 25 years or more as is! you said you sealed it? that is more than enough!!

NEVER varnish polyurethane or lacquer cedar...the oil in the cedar will make the stuff blister and peel....just use a good sealer every year or so....the better brands of water seal have a UV protect-ant built in

Stick with the occasional pigmented sealer. The pigment will help protect from UV damage. Varnishes tend to be high maintenance after a few years due to pealing.

why do you want to ruin cedar siding by putting on varnish, just spray with thompson's water sealer
