Can you safely paint vinyl siding a shade darker than its original color?

I have to paint a storage building that is sided with white vinyl siding, to a light/medium shade of gray to match our new homes vinyl siding. I have seen a warning on some of the paints I am considering using that you shouldn’t paint vinyl darker than the original color, only lighter. It says it can warp the vinyl due to heat absorption. Does anyone know how true this is? Is it only for really dark shades of paints?
