stigmajones asked:

I am looking for some specific info on how much more should I expect to pay for James Hardy siding over vinyl? Are there different charges for different colors?

What does “log” mean?

Monday, February 25th, 2008
derejrcar asked:

In an explanation of a problem such as this:
The formula is An = Ao(1 + r)^n

If An = 2000, Ao - 1000, r = .10 for 10%, so the equation is

2000 = 1000(1.1)^n Dividing both sides by 1000, you get

2 = 1.1^n Now take the log of both sides.

log(2) = log(1.1^n) The exponent moves in front of the log times the log.

log(2) = n*log(1.1) Solving for n, you get:

log(2)/log(1.1) = n

7.27 = n, so about 7.27 years ( or 8 if you want a whole number answer)

What does “log” stand for/mean, or what does it require you to do? I have no idea.

Rhonda

Cedar siding above heat pump?

Friday, February 22nd, 2008
peepoogenderparts asked:

My cedar siding above my heat pump looks awful. It faces direct sunlight, as well.

Does it look dreadful because of the air blowing on it during the winter from the heat pump? (Almost like steam)

Do I need to seal my cedar shingle siding before staining/painting?

Thursday, February 21st, 2008
dniemi3 asked:

I am installing cedar shingle siding. I’ve seen many sides where the splashback from the roof make the shingles look black near the bottom. I do not want this to happen. Do I need to put a sealer on mine or anything to preserve them before I stain/paint? It will probably be 2-3 months before staining or painting. I’m not sure which I will be doing yet.

Without using a circular saw how can I cut for exterior window trim in siding? Is there a smaller tool?

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008
GiddyupG asked:

I want to install (I think) 1.75″ X 3.5″ boards around the perimeter of the exterior windows, to define and give some trim to paint, and my handi-man left me with three more windows to do.
He was using a circular saw, but I’m not wanting to wield that thing, so is there a smaller cutting tool that can cut through the cedar siding boards (without removing them)? I saw once something on TV that “vibrated” through wood…but anyway, I just don’t want to use my circular saw, I’m not dainty enough with it. Any suggestions? THANKS

Should I install new vinyl siding or paint existing aluminum siding?

Saturday, February 9th, 2008
mmurphy384 asked:

My colonial house was built in 1966 and has aluminum siding. I was was shocked at some recent quotes to paint the exterior of the house ($4000). I hate to put that much money into something that doesn’t really add any value. It got me thinking that I should consider re-siding the house instead (shingles, vinyl siding?). That said:

1) How is Aluminum as a siding. Is this something that is a considered a good thing (more durable???). More specifically, is a move to premium vinyl siding a step up or a step down.

2) ) If I go through the trouble of removing the aluminum siding, should I consider any other projects (are there any house wraps that can help with insulation or things like that)????

3) What costs are involved with vinyl siding. As in, when the Home Depot guy comes for an estimate, what is he going to try to rope me into and should I bite?

Many thanks

Sharon
