Should I repair wood siding on my house or replace with vinyl siding?

Monday, June 30th, 2008
Chrissie asked:

There is deterioration on several parts of the wood siding as well as in the soffits. Some boards are actually missing. My husband and I are thinking of purchasing home and wanted to know if it would be more beneficial to repair the wood siding or take the rotten boards off and put up vinyl siding. Thanks for the help.

How hard is it to re-do vinyl siding on a house that already has vinyl siding?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008
WantToLose asked:

We just had a garage built and now the siding doesnt quite match plus ours is quite old anyway. I’m wondering how hard it would be to re-do since the house already has vinyl siding on it? Or…if anyone else has another solution to make the house and garage match that would be great too. My garage is VERY white…and my house is an off white (I think because its old and now discolored). We’ve tried cleaning it professionally, but it didn’t work.

Should I remove vinyl siding from my house?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008
Irene M asked:

I bought my home a year ago. There were so many things I liked about it that I overlooked the fact that it’s covered in ugly vinyl siding. Most people around here seem to share my opinion of vinyl siding, so I think that removing it and repainting the house would probably slightly increase its value. Would this be very expensive? What if there’s some kind of problem with the wood siding that the previous owners used the vinyl to cover up?

How can I prevent algae from forming on my vinyl siding?

Thursday, June 26th, 2008
BrawnzGuy asked:

My house has vinyl siding, and on the northern, shaded, parts of the house algae forms on the siding and I have to power-wash it a few times a year. Is there any coating or preventative spray that I can put on the siding to stop the algae from forming on there in the first place — or is it just as easy to power wash?

How can I remove rust stains from exterior vinyl siding?

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008
Caroline H asked:

My window air conditioner dripped outside and left rust stains down our vinyl siding - I just tried power washing it with siding cleaner and I also used a Mr. Clean Magic eraser; neither worked all the way - it may be stained in to the siding. Any ideas of how to remove it or cover it? The siding is white. Thanks for any help!

edouglas72 asked:

We have a 1908 1/12 story home with the original wood siding on it. I am tired of painting and would like to put vinyl siding on it this spring but not sure how to measure so that I know how much it will take and the cost.

Where can I purchase insulated vinyl siding?

Saturday, June 7th, 2008
Scot asked:

Can anyone tell me where I can purchase insulated vinyl siding? This is siding that has foam insulation fused to the back of the siding. So far the only place I have found it at is by having a contractor install it. I want to do it myself & save money. Is this product available to the general public?

How do I remove broken fasteners from vinyl siding?

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008
daogress asked:

A funnel cloud took off one of my decorative
plastic shutters, which I have on either
side of my windows, around the perimeter
of my home. It was attached with some
of those easyloc fasteners. The force of
the winds, ripped the tops off of them, and
left the “screw” part of the easylocs inside
of the house (vinyl siding). How do I get
those broken pieces out of the vinyl siding
so I can refasten the shutters with new easylocs.
There is no leverage space to get in any type
of tweezers. Plus there is a lot of resistence
because of the way the easylocs are made.
I thought of using a real thin drill bit and
go into the fastener and then trying to pull
the mout that way, but they are only about a
quarter inch wide. Oy vey. Help!
