Is there a way to find out what is underneath my Vinyl Siding, with out destroying it?

The vinyl siding on my house used to be white, after years of neglect (from the previous owner) it is now stained, discolored, and generally unattractive. I have seen one picture of the house from many years back that leads me to believe that the vinyl siding is not original to the 1976 built home. I would like to remove some of the siding to see if I have a viable option. If there is no other siding underneath the vinyl I will have to leave it up until an option becomes available. Can I remove some of the vinyl to investigate, then put it right back up if I need to?
