Halloween Pranks: How Do You Clean Egg Off Of Vinyl Siding?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009
Evy asked:

My home (along with the neighbors’) got egged for the first time laon Halloween. Does anyone know how to clean the egg off of vinyl siding? Does it make a difference if it’s frozen onto your siding?

Thanks very much for any help - much appreciated! :-) There’s a lot of yellow egg yolk on painted wood trim as well as on the vinyl siding. Does the protein cause the damage and if so would “Shout” pre-stain treatment work on the egg like it does on blood and chocolate stains?

If I don’t have a pressure washer - what are my alternatives?

Patrick

Monday, June 8th, 2009
TRfella asked:

We are buying a great house in a great neighborhood, but don’t like the look of the vinyl siding. Is it possible to replace this with hardy board? Would it cost a small fortune? Would it significantly raise our home’s value?

Using Vinyl Siding as a Protective Exterior Wall

Sunday, June 7th, 2009
Muna wa Wanjiru asked:

There are numerous homes that feature vinyl siding as a protective exterior wall. These homes are modern homes as well as the older type of homes. Vinyl siding is very popular these days both with homeowners and also with builders. The many companies that manufacture vinyl siding are giving their vinyl siding and the various attendant accessories the look of freshly painted wood.

Vinyl siding is not a natural product it is made from polyvinyl chloride or as it is more commonly called PVC. As the vinyl siding is made from this substance it has a long lasting ability. Few other types of siding barring that of stone siding is known to last as long, before you need to see about installing new sheets or panels of siding.

The various manufactures of vinyl siding are making their vinyl siding look like wood. The different colors that are deep baked into the vinyl siding just enhances the look of real wood on this siding. To make vinyl siding able to conform to the needs of customers the siding has been designed so that it also feels like wood.

As a result of this you can have your home looking like a Victorian house in England, a log cabin retreat or even give some character to an old colonial type of home. Using vinyl sidings on ranches will give the ranch a look of rustic elegance that can generally be achieved with wood.

Many of the vinyl siding companies will design the vinyl siding so that you can attach this siding to the exterior of your home with only a little bit of trouble. Once the siding has been attached to your home there are decorative vinyl finishes that you can buy.

These classic style millwork will not only make your house look more attractive but they can also hide any joinery that may be present in the vinyl siding. These vinyl siding accessories can be seen in dentil moldings, corner posts, shutters, window and door surrounds.

You can also fix the vinyl siding on your exterior walls in a horizontal, diagonal, and even vertical pattern. The siding is available in varying clapboard widths, and textures of the different types of wood that is used in house siding.

Drafty House? Try Vinyl Replacement Windows

Friday, June 5th, 2009
Shane Hester asked:

It’s time to get your house airtight. No more leaky windows heating up the outside world! You need a great set of replacement windows to make your house right. Of course, you’ll need to decide what the best material for your home is. You can choose wood, aluminum or composite, but you’ll get the most for your money from a new set of vinyl replacement windows.

Made from one of the most durable materials used today, vinyl replacement windows are built to withstand years of harsh weather. They’re not porous like wood, and they are far more energy-efficient than aluminum. Vinyl is bright, sturdy and made for the long haul.

Vinyl replacement windows are a great way to save money while adding value and style to your home. A wide palette of brilliant colors and a myriad of gorgeous styles are available. These windows are easy to install and are also light on the pocketbook. Take some time to check out the options in vinyl replacement windows.

Vinyl is one of the most durable materials used in modern window construction. Gone are the days of expanding and contracting vinyl, prone to leaks and drafts. New vinyl replacement windows rival any other windows in the area of thermal expansion. They keep their shape and size all year long.

Vinyl replacement windows come in a rainbow of colors. Even though they can’t be painted, they can be made to match any color you choose. The color goes completely through the material, so scratches and nicks are a problem of the past. When little Johnny scrapes his toys against the window frame, you won’t even notice it since the color will remain the same.

So you want your new windows to fit into the arch where the old windows were? No problem. You won’t have to do any work reshaping the frames. Vinyl replacement windows can be ordered to your specifications, so that no one but you will know that they aren’t the original windows. Whether it’s a gothic archway or an eyebrow window, you’ll have no trouble getting a new set of windows to suit your space.

Vinyl replacement windows are not only available in a wide variety of styles, but in a wide variety of prices as well. You can spend a little or a lot, but be warned that you’ll get quality in relation to price. Spend a little extra now and you’ll save more when the windows last years longer. The money you’ll save in energy costs will be substantially greater when you purchase quality vinyl windows, as well. Install them correctly and see the difference on your upcoming bills.

Whatever styles and colors you need, vinyl replacement windows are available to help your home look sleek, stylish and accommodating. They’ll save you money now and in the long run and they’ll still be in great shape when you sell your home. You may even be able to move into a bigger home with some of the money you save. Of course, you’ll want to make sure that home has top-of-the-line vinyl windows as well!

Vinyl siding or old block, what house is worth more?

Friday, June 5th, 2009
antonedbone asked:

I have a large 2 story home that has a block outer layer, with about a 2 inch gap then wood, then frame. The block is pretty deteriorated in several spots. We are arguing whether to repair the block/brick and paint, or tear down the block/brick outer layer and vinyl side the wooden home found inside this block layer. What is more valuable, a newly vinyl sided home or a block home? Both ways will invlove plenty of money and repair.

How to Choose the Color of Vinyl Exterior Shutters for your Home

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009
Shad Storhaug asked:

The main value of decorative vinyl exterior shutters is the color that you choose that will contrast or complement the color of the house itself. The best look is to have 3 colors on your home (other than the color of the roof), the main exterior walls, the trim color, and the shutters. The front door of the house could match the exterior shutters, but if you end up with 4 colors that is ok too.

One thing that you should decide right away is how much maintenance you are willing (or want) to do. Paintable vinyl shutters can be ordered that will match any house (some brands, such as Alcoa shutters are paintable in any color). Some people order paintable exterior shutters because they want to match a very specific color, and other people order them because they want the option of painting the shutters a different color later. However, you should also keep in mind that the colored paintable vinyl exterior shutters will degrade and need to be painted every few years just like the exterior of your house. Commercial exterior latex paints are formulated for a life expectancy of 8 - 10 years. Moulded-through exterior vinyl shutters never need paint, so there will be less work to do the next time you paint your house. It is recommended that you spray paint the shutters if you go this route.

If you decide not to get paintable shutters, black and White are by far the most popular vinyl exterior shutter colors primarily because together they can match nearly any house. If you want to “go with the flow”, order white if you have a dark colored house, and order black if you have a light colored house. However, if your house is white with black (or other dark colored) trim, you may wish to add some more color to the house by ordering vinyl window shutters in a shade of red, blue, or green.

Since you will have more choices for buying vinyl exterior shutters on the Internet than if you buy them locally, the best way to decide on the color of exterior vinyl shutters is to order a vinyl shutters color sample. The color sample will contain a “keychain” with all of the available colors for a particular brand, and you can pick them up for as little as $5. Most vendors even give you a credit toward your order so the net cost of the color sample is free. The color sample is made from the same material as the vinyl shutters, so you will be able to touch and feel the material before you commit to a purchase.

Another advantage of ordering vinyl shutter color samples is that they are shaped like miniature exterior shutters. You can step back from the house and hold the color sample at arm’s length to see visualize what the style and color of vinyl exterior shutters will look like on your windows.

After you have looked at the available vinyl exterior shutter colors, you will have a better idea of what is available. If you can’t find the exact color you need, you can always go with black (for low maintenance), or paintable (for an exact match). Of course, that said it is your house so which exterior vinyl shutters will look best is entirely up to you.
