Do I need to seal my cedar shingle siding before staining/painting?

I am installing cedar shingle siding. I’ve seen many sides where the splashback from the roof make the shingles look black near the bottom. I do not want this to happen. Do I need to put a sealer on mine or anything to preserve them before I stain/paint? It will probably be 2-3 months before staining or painting. I’m not sure which I will be doing yet.

yes…it would be best to seal them, before any stain goes on…
and for your black bottom stain…(this is caused by water splashing on it)you should install a good eaves through.

If you seal your shingles you can not use stain(stain is absorbed into the wood). I assume you are talking about the area above a roof. If you leave enough room between the roof and the shingles you should be OK. Just make sure it is flashed well and enough room is left for a lay over if required. (a lay over is when they put shingles over the shingles already on the roof).

Like Keven said do not seal if you are going to stain. And if you stain use a alkyd (oil) base product it last the longest The accrylic based ones do not allow the siding to breathe as well

First of all you’re talking about 3 different processes.

Sealing, isn’t a lifetime Miracle. It needs re-application on some scheduled basis. in 2 or 3 months your RAW cedar will SILVER anyway.

Sealing will also, very likely defeat any attempt to stain, unless you manage a varnish stain over the entire house.

Cedar is extremely absorbent, and will leach its color onto paint, most especially latex, so for that, sealing first may help, BUT NONE of the three processes will stop the issue of Black, and BTW that may be Mold, not staining from the substance of the flashing.
