I have a double wide mobile home that is 22feet by 60 feet long, How many squares do I need to put vinyl siding on it? It has they old, i think tin with a styrofoam back glued to it, under that is just black paper. Do I need to put something over the black paper or can I just go over it?

If you do it yourself it will be about 1/4 of what you will pay a contractor to do it.

to figure the # of squares you multiply the height X width X length, then devide by 10. a square is 10′ X 10′. that will give you the straight runs and for any peaks, like both ends of the house figure just one end as a rectangle, the extra being the other end. siding comes in various qualities with the thicker being better. if you strip off your old siding it might be a good idea to add insulation in the form of foam board before you put on the vinyl. the cost of installation varies through out the country due to local building requirements and costs of living and labor. material costs vary with quality of the product, and the accessory pieces that are needed to install the siding can cost almost as much as the siding itself. when you figure the size of your house don’t subtract for windows and doors to account for waste, except maybe for sliding glass doors and picture windows. get estimates and references from three sources along with what materials and how they will do the job, that way you are comparing apples to apples. check the references and with the better business bureau on these contractors. don’t just go with the lowest quote, pick the one you feel the most comfortable with and think you can work with the best. good luck.

it will take about 14 square. dont remove the tin siding! it is structural. be sure to remove the labels and reinstall them in approximately the same location upon completion. if you dont legaly you cannot sell the home until it is brought back up to code.for the top run use metal facia tucked under the gutter flatten it out a bit so that the bottom lip slips under the lock tab of the top run of siding. it adds a nice finnish to the job. undersill sealed with caulk will eventualy fail and water will get behind the siding when it builds up and freezez it will tear the siding off of the house.

      Two good answers here already.

Generally we sell vinyl siding in California for $900 per square installed or $9.00 per square foot if that is easier to figure out.

You can certainly buy the material for less than it would cost for the labor and materials to have a professional contractor do it for you. Either way, vinyl siding is an expensive way to make your structure look new again. Many coatings will do a better job for less. If you have to have siding I much prefer the look of fiber cement siding like that from James Hardie siding.

If you do decide to go with vinyl, Certainteed is a good and respected supplier of vinyl siding, but proper installation is difficult for most laymen. If you are planning on staying in the mobile home then you may want to just have a professional do it so your warranty is intact.
