Is it necessary to use house wrap with vinyl siding?

Posted by admin
Kohato asked:

We recently installed vinyl siding to our forty-some-odd year old house. The contractor neither removed the old house wrap, which was severely worn, nor install a new one.

My concern is: is it okay to install siding even without a house wrap, and is it fine to just leave the old layer on?

your dude ripped you off the old house wrap comes off and neww goes up it increases the R value by about a third to half and the vynyl breathes so it doesnt rot the wood so the wrap is needed for the vapor barrier for the wood and to keep the siding from poping due to heat or cold or moisture ,, ask at a home supply store like depot theyll tell you

If severly worn includes large rips, or missing sections, then I would be a little miffed at your installer for not doing a full and proper job. Tyvec house wrap (typical brand name) is actually pretty good stuff, and is recommended to help keep drafts from coming in, moisture from seeping in, and even helps provide a bug barrier. It is “ok” to install siding without, but to help with your bills and overall longevity, I would suggest you query the installer as to the reason why the wrap was Not used.
      Good luck.

Sometimes, the problem with trying to get the best price, we cheat ourselves from the best job. Sounds like buddy cut an important corner in order to get the job and still make money.

I would say that you got ripped off man. I would have suggested that you replace the old wrap.
