Is there a way to find out what is underneath my Vinyl Siding, with out destroying it?

The vinyl siding on my house used to be white, after years of neglect (from the previous owner) it is now stained, discolored, and generally unattractive. I have seen one picture of the house from many years back that leads me to believe that the vinyl siding is not original to the 1976 built home. I would like to remove some of the siding to see if I have a viable option. If there is no other siding underneath the vinyl I will have to leave it up until an option becomes available. Can I remove some of the vinyl to investigate, then put it right back up if I need to?

very easy to do and very easy to replace. go ahead, it is one of the most readily dyi home products out there. have some fun, I doubt it is original, siding was generally aluminum back in those days. take a look, it can’t hurt anything

At one of the joint in the vinyl siding, slide a couple fingers between the two layers of vinyl near the bottom. gently pull down and outward. This should allow you to unlock the piece your are pulling on from the piece below . Once it has started to unlock you should be able to peel it back a couple feet to see what is underneath. To put it back together let the piece fall back into place. Where it starts to with the palm of your hand put a lttle downward and inward pressure on the top piece and slide the palm of you hand over the locking mechinism back the the joint where you started.

they sell a tool to go under one piece and and pull it from the “lock” that holds it. if you go to a seam on the siding and look under the lip you will see that it doesnt curl under the lock at that spot. you can use your finger or flathead screwdriver to slide in and unlock. then just lift up and push down on the piece you unlocked to lock it back

This are inter-locking pieces…more than likely you have plywood or osb underneath…i am kinda hard pressed to belive you have another layer of siding underneath since the vynil siding you ahve now requires brackets to be installed underneath
