Any peices you don't use can be taken back if it was in stock and not a special order. Lots of people are going with shake now but it is way more expensive, maybe 4 times as expensive. When getting prices on a box, always ask how many square come in it. Our shake here comes 1 square to a box not 2 squares like the origianl siding. Lowes and home depot are no the way to go... find a warehouse or someone where contractors buy their siding at. I'm not sure about complete cost because I always do sub work for different business but just for my labor, I charge $15 to cap a window if it is average size. I actually just did a few really large windows and I got paid $30 per window. I get around $50 per square for siding labor and $2 per foot for the boxing. Please know that large companies will charge much more. They will charge for the subs pay, the material cost, and their cut, like any other business. It's okay though, remember you get what you pay for. Pay cheap, get cheap! Make sure you hire a professional that has general insurance. When we had ours replaced three years ago, we were given $305/square by the insurance company. So it may depends on the area and going rate of labor/supplies. (I'm in Chicago burbs) Also, when getting quotes make sure it includes disposal of old siding (if it's aluminum without insulated backing, you should take it to a recycler yourself, we got $600 for our old aluminum siding 3 years ago), tyvek behind the siding, caulking around windows, fastening gutter downspouts back to the siding, and find out how they will handle electrical boxes, phone boxes, and other utility boxes. Also, inquire about the thickness of the siding. Not all vinyl siding is created equal. The stuff on my old house is thinner than the stuff we just put on my parent's lakehouse. Thicker being better, less prone to ripple/wave. I'm speaking about standard 4" double lap, I haven't worked with dutch siding yet but it seems like it would be even better. It took about 13 squares. He charged me about $4k installed with labor and material. This figures to about $307 per square which was the medium bid on the project.
