If I had a house and it needed the cedar shakes replaced, I would go with Hardy board lap siding. It isn't cheap but it will last forever and holds paint better than any wood. It is also better looking than vinyl siding.

My son had it on his garage in Houston and that is about a tough a test as you can find. It looks great after 10 years.

I don't know where you live, but in California, vinyl siding is shunned like the plague. Everyone always wonders what is being hidden under the vinyl. Personally, I think vinyl looks tacky.

I question the wisdom in cedar shakes, also. If you live in a high fire area, cedar shakes are inadvisable. I would have the home done in stucco. It's fire resistant, takes paint nicely, and looks good for another 50 years.

It depends on the climate. Some cities prohibit actual wood siding and roofing because of fire concerns. In the south, the humidity would destroy cedar shakes in a decade or less. For durability, go vinyl.

Cedar is bug repellent, changes to 'dirty' color, weather resistant, can still retain mold/mildew, will retain dirt/cobwebs because of rough texture.

Vinyl needs bottom row totally sealed to prevent bugs getting into home, easy to clean, not bug resistant, weather resistant, have various colors to chose that will not change shade as quickly.

Choice is yours. Personally, I would keep cedar on home for bug resistance and vinyl over it - - if planning to keep & stay in home for long time. If plan on selling in near future, repair cedar shakes.

either material has the potential of wearing, regardless. i would try the vinyl siding for something new. it's durable for the most part and easy to clean
