I need to stain my siding. Prior to staining I need to caulk the vertical seams. What is the best product to use?

Polyurethane caulk. Because polyurethane expands and contracts with the cedar and is made for exterior use. But you want to stain it first because if you caulk it first you can not guarantee that the stain will be the same color on the caulk as it is on the wood. The polyurethane caulk comes in many colors so you can match it after wards.

Vulkem 116 caulking, that is what you need for cedar siding

Go ahead and start staining. For painting, I would tell you to use DAP. It is inexpensive and a good product. I don’t know of any caulk that will take stain. You should have some type of building paper behind your siding, ( Tyvek or felt). That should be enough for you not to worry about any water damage.

While I typing, I had a thought. Solid body stains will adhere to caulk (DAP). Semi transparent stains will not.

you say vertical seams as in the “butt joints”, where one board touches another board? best to use not a caulk but a stainable filler, this will hide and stain alot better than any caulk could ever, just more work, sanding and such.
there are caulks that are made for this, that are colored.
But the correct caulk to use in situation other than mentioned is silicone acrylic latex, now some manufacturers such as dap say its stainable, but closest I got is painted it, I havne’t really got to test this just claim just yet.
My opinion on the butt seams stick to wood filler, on edges buy the closest color to silicone acrylic latex you can get, They have many colors to choose from and Sherwin williams or local paint supply is your best bet, Don’t rely on homedepot/lowes carrying this type of caulk.

You have two choices, go to Sherwin-Williams or your local paint store and buy Cedar colored caulk & go for it, or stain, let dry a couple of days & caulk with a clear caulking (NOT SILICONE) your local paintstore should carry it. Don’t use a filler, like wood filler, as it will not move with the cedar siding.

Me, I would powerwash the house, let dry overnight, caulk the seams and around the edges with cedar colored caulk, then stain. Because the staing will tint the caulk slightly.

      Good luck.

      Hi
I am not experience in this However I did have my Cedar siding stained using a contractor whom was highly recommended by several in the community. He used a wood putty on my seams not a caulk, but it was poly wood filler from what he told me it expanded with changes in weather and it took stain rather well. I am really happy with the results this was 7 years ago and its looking great with no cracks.
Perhaps your just used to using caulk for your painting, some contractors I found are set in their own way of doing things.
So my experience is wood filler will work. This guy was highly recommended and very good at his work so just ask your home improvement store for expandable wood filler.
